The Transboundary Rivers, Ecologies and Development Studies (TREADS) Initiative was established in 2018 at the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), with Dr. Srinivas Chokkakula’s (Chief Executive, CPR and Lead, TREADS) appointment as the Professorial Research Chair—Water Conflicts and Governance for the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS). The Initiative conducts interdisciplinary research to address contemporary questions about water policy and governance of transboundary waters. We are grounded in South Asia’s national and subnational institutional context and specialise in the study of inter-state conflicts and cooperation, with allied interests in federalism, the politics of infrastructure development, and urban water security.
